Tours

Emily - Tours was a great small town with beautiful buildings and in close proximity to some extravagant chateaux. We stayed in a local youth hostel and for a couple of days we enjoyed France the way it was meant to be enjoyed - great food which included some exquisite french crepes and absorbed the tranquil landscape (in between the tourist bus runs). It rained most of the time we were there but that didn't stop us from having a great time and it made up for our awful Bordeaux experience.
Jeremy - On our second afternoon we were wandering the old town and in a somewhat surreal moment we saw our mate Tom from Canberra. He was walking down the other side of the street and had just arrived from our next destination; Paris. Excited to see a familiar face we arranged to catch up with him over the next couple of days, sharing stories about great places to visit and places to avoid. One of our highlights of Tours was the Chateaux Chenonceau, although full to the brim with tourists it gave a real insight into the cosy lives of the rich and royal. I will leave it up to the photos to demonstrate. As it was my second time in some of these places it also made me feel a little old as it was about 9 years between visits! We left Tours ready for the main event of France - Paris!

Bordeaux - Expensive Wine and a 10 day growth

Well, our time in Bordeaux started off poorly as we checked into the Youth Hostel from Hell! Our dorm room was full of mould, stuffy and our mattresses were completely covered in plastic. The icing on the cake? The used bandaid left on the shower ceiling for us as a welcome gift. To escape our awful hostel we decided to splurge on a day tour to the Bordeaux wine region, it turned out to be one of the best tours we've done so far. We started off at a wine museum and learnt all about the history of the wine industry, we then headed to lunch at a cheese cafe, where we had duck and several courses of cheese inspired dishes followed by an all you can eat pass to their cheese basement (Jeremy over indulged). After lunch we headed to a couple of wineries where we sampled a couple of vintages and enjoyed the Bordeaux countryside. Over all there was not much to this place other than a well protected wine making industry.

San Sebastian

Jeremy - We arrived at San Sebastian bus depot from Madrid about 2 hours later than scheduled and jumped on a bus towards our hostel and the beach. The beach is a crescent moon shape and at the top is a small area that forms the old town. The old town is where all the action is, with tapas, pubs, cafes and our hostel.
The hostel was in average shape and named something like "Aussie Pension". We can't remember why we booked it but wish we could to see what the motivation might have been. The private room for two had four beds in it and one of its doors lead into the kitchen/ office area so we could hear the the owner and her son as we lay in bed. We shared tiny little bathrooms that had a bad smell and were always damp and alcohol was banned! Now this was not unlike some of the other places we had stayed but it was going to be Emily's birthday while here so it was a little disappointing.
Apart from this I really liked San Seb! Nice beach, cool sunsets and a more relaxed feel than other European beach havens. It had a mix of Spanish and French which made for a pleasant feel. However, the nudist calmly strolling along the shore during lunch time and the Basque bomb threat at the local port did give us a glimpse of "the other side" of San Sebastian locals.
After almost two weeks in Spain I can safely say we were sick of tapas! Unfortunately this is not the place to be sick of them as they were everywhere! We managed to avoid eating too many tapas, this was helped by me getting a gastro bug and spending a lot of time in the hostel and the smelly bathrooms. After three days of perfect weather and beaching (in between recovering from gastro) we where ready to leave Spain and move to the next city. As we headed to the station to catch a train to Bordeaux in the early morning a light shower came across from the sea giving us the hit that summer may be drawing to a close.
